Some New Things From TRESemmé

I spotted some new products from TRESemmé not too long ago and I was sucked in by simple yet very pretty packaging and lovely product names... and by the fact that I just love TRESemmé.

Some personal hair facts before I go further with this post:

I've got ridiculously thick hair. It's also got a medium/coarse texture. It has some natural wave to it, if I keep my hair shorter (bra-strap length and shorter) I can scrunch it with a misting of conditioner and water and it will almost be curly. (This wavy/curly texture is often called "wurly" - it's more wavy than you tend to think of waves, but not quite curly either, it's between the two.) When it's longer though the weight of it pulls the waves down looser for soft, gentle waves. At the moment my hair is just a bit past hip length. I have what is known as "virgin hair". All that means is that it's not been chemically treated in any way - no hair dye, no perming or relaxing treatments etc. I very rarely heat style my hair - once or twice every couple months at most. I do NOT shampoo my hair every day; I shampoo 2-3 times a week. (Unless I do something that results in a need to wash it more, of course.) On the 'between days' I use waterless/dry shampoo as needed. I use conditioner every time I wash my hair, and sometimes on between days I will condition it, if it needs it. (All hair needs to be conditioned, and the longer it gets the more it needs moisture!) I use a wide-toothed comb to carefully comb tangles out. Once the tangles are gone I use a paddle brush to brush it. I wear my hair up in some manner on most days, or at the very least in a braid/french braid. It's rarely left down - though I do occasionally let it loose just to enjoy it.

SO. All that said, let's get on to my experience with these new products from TRESemmé, shall we? I wanted to be sure you all know my hair care routine/hair habits before going into this post further because the way you treat your hair has a huge impact on how effective certain products might be for you - someone (like me) who doesn't heat style much is probably going to notice faster/better results from certain products than someone who heat styles on a daily basis for example. I think knowing how I usually handle my hair can help in understanding my results from the hair care products I use.

TRESemmé has two new lines of products out right now: Nourishing Rituals and Split Remedy.

What TRESemmé says about the Nourishing Rituals line (from their web site):

Uniquely formulated with advanced nourishing ingredients, this full line of products leaves your hair healthy-looking and shiny. Take a moment to treat your hair and yourself to the indulgent and intensive conditioning experience you are used to finding in salon, at home.

Each formula with natural ingredients nourishes hair: Protein Crème, with soy protein, for improved strength*, Rejuvenating Mask, with wild-flower honey, for silkier hair** and Hydrating Serum, with coconut and argan oils, for smoother results**.
*less breakage when combing vs. non-conditioning shampoo
**vs. non-conditioning shampoo alone

Nourishing Rituals contains four products: Cashmere Touch Hydrating Serum, Rejuvenating Mud Masque, Protein Renewal Creme and Liquid Gold Shine Therapy. When I saw this line at the store recently, I picked up the Cashmere Touch Hydrating Serum and the Rejuvenating Mud Masque. I intend to get the Protein Renewal Creme and Liquid Gold Shine Therapy as well. (Though I have not seen the Liquid Gold yet, there's no place for it on the shelf where I usually shop, I will have to check out some other stores to try to find it!)

First we'll talk about the Rejuvenating Mud Masque! Think of this like a deep conditioner. It's got a very rich, thick texture. After shampooing, apply this all over and let it sit for 3-5 minutes before rinsing out. With such long thick hair I do need to use a pretty generous amount to cover all my hair, but it spreads easily and (considering how much hair I have) I don't need to use a lot to coat all my hair well with it. I very gently coil my hair into a bun and secure it with a hair stick or two while it's doing it's thing and I finish up with shaving etc. before rinsing it out.

I've taken to using this once a week instead of my usual conditioner - you can use it however often your hair needs it. This leaves my hair very soft and tangle free. An excellent deep conditioner without any extra fuss over what the usual shower routine entails.

(I just realized I forgot to take a picture of this by itself. Had to crop this from the picture with both products. oops. haha.Sorry!)

And the Cashmere Touch Hydrating Serum... I admit, I was really sucked in to buying this for the name. Who could resist a hair care product with a name like Cashmere Touch?! Not me, that's for sure! I love the simple design. This has a nice pump dispenser, which makes getting the proper amount of product easy.

I have got to say... I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! You can apply this to damp or dry hair. I've done it both ways - equal results either way of course, it's simply a matter of personal preference when you apply it. It says to dispense 3-4 pumps or amount needed for your hair type. When I apply this, I divide my hair down the middle and put each half over my shoulders. I dispense 3 pumps into my hand, rub my hands together and apply to one half of my hair. Then I dispense 3 more pumps, rub my hands together and apply to the other half of my hair. Then I comb my hair to make sure it's evenly distributed through out all my hair. I think for shorter/thinner hair 2-3 pumps would suffice ("shorter" meaning about bra strap length) and if your hair is really short (shoulder length or shorter) even just one pump could do it, depending on how thick your hair is.

This stuff is seriously amazing - it leaves my hair SO soft, silky and shiny! I cannot get over it... the results are comparable to Biosilk Silk Therapy but I like Cashmere Touch a LOT more than Silk Therapy. For one thing, it's much cheaper. (Always a huge bonus with awesome products!) But also, the consistency of Cashmere Touch is thinner than Silk Therapy, which I feel makes it easier to distribute through your hair. It seems to soak in a lot better/faster than Silk Therapy, too. I feel like Silk Therapy tends to sit ON the hair more than sinking IN to the hair, and if you are not careful it can leave your hair looking and feeling greasy. Cashmere Touch soaks in after just a couple minutes, and leaves your hair so amazingly silky. I honestly do not ever want to be without Cashmere Touch... I love it so much!

I would definitely recommend either of these products based on my experience with them, but if you only intend to get one of them make it the Cashmere Touch Hydrating Serum!

(PS - I also picked up one of the items from the new Split Remedy line, but I have not used it yet. Look for that review some time in the next couple weeks!)

NOTD

It's been such a long time since I've done anything fun with my nails. I just have not felt inspired. Last night I decided to try to come up with a little something if for no other reason than just to have a new post here. This is what I ended up doing:

(Applied over a clear SensatioNail manicure)

1 coat Sally Hansen Hard As Nails "Cold As Ice" (you can't tell in the picture but this is a very pretty white-pink opalescent color... and yes, very sheer!)
black creme polish on the tips
Konad Special Polish "Pink" to stamp over the black tips with Bundle Monster ip BM-220
SinfulColors Nail Art "Flower Girl" to make a stripe along the smile line to neaten the edges a bit

And then I decided it still needed a little something more so I used Konad Special Polish "White" and Bundle Monster ip BM-222 to stamp the butterfly. (Which I was not paying attention and did upside down. oops. Guess I really am out of practice with doing more than a one color manicure!)

Sealed it all with a coat of Sally Hansen Double Duty.

I didn't notice the smudge on the tip of my ring finger till this morning, at which point... I don't feel like fixing it. lol It's not as noticeable in person so I"m not really worried about it.

Mending Broken Nails

I am surprised I never got around to making this post yet, in the couple years of this blog's existence. You'd think that this subject would have been among the first I wanted to write up. But somehow it slipped into the back of my mind and I just never got around to covering this one.

Not all breaks can be mended and sometimes we have to just 'grin and bear it' whilst clipping off a nail and then  waiting for it to grow out. But often, if we act quickly, a break CAN be mended and given a chance to grow out before we clip the broken portion off. This is especially useful information to have for those painfully low breaks that can sometimes occur at or even below (YIKES!) the smile line.

I wish I had step by step photos for this, but I don't. Use your imaginations, ok?

What you need:

Nail polish remover & a cotton ball/pad
Nail glue or super glue
Tweezers
A tea bag (unused!)
An emery board

The first step is to carefully remove any existing nail polish with the polish remover and cotton pad. Even if you aren't wearing polish, carefully clean the nail to remove any dirt or oils that may be present.

Next, trim a small piece of the tea bag to cover the break entirely. (You can usually do this by snipping the top of the tea bag where it's been folded over, and then you can still brew up the tea later on. OR, you can buy empty tea bags and use those. This is what I use as we drink a lot of tea in this house and much of it we purchase loose and fill the tea bags ourselves.) Sometimes I'll go ahead and cut the tea bag in a strip to go across the whole width of my nail, to give the nail some added strength while the break grows out.

Once you have the tea bag trimmed to size, apply a dot of nail glue to the nail directly on the break. Use the tweezers to place the tea bag over the glue. You can use one layer of the tea bag, but I like to use two for the added durability. If necessary add another drop of glue on top of the piece of tea bag to help seal the entire piece to the nail, and press gently with the tweezers to assure it's flush to the nail.

Let the glue dry completely - this should only take about 5 minutes or so. Once the glue is dry, use the emery board to lightly buff the nail and ensure the repaired patch is smooth. If you run your finger over the repair, there should be a smooth finish to it with no bumps or rough edges. This should be a nearly invisible fix - you can't see it unless you're really, really looking for it.

For some this is sufficient to repair a break. You can now paint your nails as usual, if desired.

For me, since I tend to be pretty hard on my nails, this alone is not enough to last more than a day or two. So when I had to do this recently for TWO nails (you never can just break one, can you? It always has to take a friend along with it.) I decided I'd apply some SensatioNail on top of the fix. I went through the above steps as usual, and then followed the usual steps with the SensatioNail for a clear manicure. (SensatioNail cleanser, primer, two coats of the base/top coat then cleanser and done.) Adding the SensatioNail to the process REALLY helped give my nails an extra layer of strength and durability so the repair can last till the breaks grow out enough that I can clip the broken portion off. Which is great because one of those breaks was significantly below the smile line. (Never ever fun when that happens.) It's still going to be a while before said breaks have grown enough I can trim them down, but they are holding up fantastically.

SensatioNail Mauve Maven

Just a quick swatch of SensatioNail's Mauve Maven gel polish. The more I use these the more I love them. =)

This is with flash; I was not able to get pictures without the flash just yet. I'll try to get a picture without the flash soon & will add to this post when I do. =)

Edited March 15th: Sorry - I did not forget about getting pictures of this polish without the flash. Things have just been insane, which seems to be the new 'normal' for me.

This is in the shade
And this is in the sun
Don't mind the ding in the polish on my middle finger. I had a bit of a mishap with my razor in the shower a few days ago. (Why do we have an impulse to try to catch things that can hurt us when we drop them?!) I'm sure I could even that out with a bit more of the top coat, but... I'm almost out of top coat and want to stretch it out as much as possible for another mani or two.

One plus to having taken this long to get pictures of this polish without the flash is you can get a better idea of the lasting power of this stuff. The first picture in this post was taken on March 8th, and it was already a couple days old at that point (applied this on the 6th) and the two I just added were taken just this afternoon. You can see where there's some growth - but (razor-dropping-dense-trying-to-catch-it ding aside) other than that it's still absolutely perfect. And it needs to be said I am NOT easy on my nails. I wash dishes and do all kinds of cleaning every day, I type a lot every day, I have a dog and two cats to deal with, I do a lot of crafts... my hands are incessantly busy and sometimes my nails suffer for it and more often than not my manicures suffer for it within a day or two at most. So this is not a "lady of leisure" 9 days later manicure. This is a "if I don't get just five minutes to myself to do nothing I'm going to scream" working woman's 9 day old manicure! LOL

I told you this stuff is awesome. ;-)  I cannot wait for them to add more colors to the line. Black would be awesome. I adore black polish but for how much I love it, I hate the maintenance involved in wearing it. For SensatioNail to have a black polish would be a dream come true for me. You have no idea. haha

Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick "Rossetto" (Kate Moss Collection)

A few weeks ago I stumbled onto a display of the Kate Moss collection of lipsticks from Rimmel. I mulled over the shades, and ended up selecting Rossetto.

As long-time readers are probably aware, I have been on the hunt for a particular shade of lipstick for years. I've yet to find it, and I think I've about exhausted the drugstore brand options and I may have to suck it up and head to a department store... see, for as much as I love makeup and as fun as it is to play with crazy bold, colorful looks sometimes... on a daily basis I don't wear much makeup and when I do wear makeup I usually keep it very soft and natural looking. As such I'm on the hunt for a shade of lipstick that doesn't look like lipstick. Something I can swipe on without the aid of a mirror, and know it looks soft and natural and does not scream "lipstick".

Rossetto is the closest to that shade I have found so far, when applied with a light hand.

natural light

natural light

I really like the formula. It's lightweight and has an almost matte finish. It isn't drying, which is a huge plus. It lasts pretty well. If you just sip a drink through the day it can survive that for several hours. As soon as you eat something though you will need to reapply.

indirect natural light, facing away from the light source

still indirect natural light but facing the light source for more light

I found that if I apply it a little heavier then blot a couple times, it almost (but not quite) has a "stained" effect and it lasts a bit longer and also looks softer and more natural. By far my favorite lipstick yet, even if it's not *quite* the shade I'm looking for.

Sad news on this lipstick though. Last night my oldest niece called to invite me to her band concert at school. It was kind of last minute, so I was in a rush to get ready to go. I swiped on this lipstick and rushed out the door. And left the lipstick on the couch, totally not thinking. When I got home.... the dog had chewed it up. =( And of COURSE, being this is a limited edition collection of lipsticks and the stores around here already do not have them anymore. So. My "almost the shade I've been looking for for years and it's close enough to keep me happy till it runs out" lipstick is gone now, and I must resume the search. sigh. Of course I can't be mad at my dog for it. I'm the one who left the lipstick on the couch. Oh well...

Liebster Award

Sapphires N Purls of The Weekly Stitch awarded me with the Liebster Award!

Now what is the Liebster Blog Award?  Liebster is German and means 'dearest' or 'beloved', but it can also mean 'favorite'. The idea behind the Liebster Award is to bring attention to blogs with less than 200 followers.  If you are selected, you need to:

1. Choose FIVE up and coming blogs to award the Liebster to (they must have less than 200 followers)

2. Show your thanks to the blogger who gave you the award by linking back to them.

3. Post the award on your blog.

4. List the bloggers you are giving this award to with links to their sites.

5. Best of all, have fun and share the love!

So, in accordance with the "Rules", here are my five blog choices, in no particular order:

1. Pocket Full Of Sunshine Boutique - Great blog from a one-woman-show small business in Pittsburgh. The PFOS owner blogs about her AMAZING products and shares all kinds of information about bath & body products, including recipes for those who are so inclined to try making their own bath & body products.

2. The Lacquered Nail - A nail polish blog - pretty self explanatory, yes? She posts some lovely photos and is quite exceptional with layering. Pretty nail art designs. Over-all inspiring really.

3. Eight Days A Week - A lovely 'general topics' blog. Working out, food, family etc.

4. Herringbone Lane - Another kind of 'general topics' blog, with lots of DIY ideas, some fashion posts here and there.

5. Sisters, Sisters - And last but not least, another "general topics" blog I've found recently. This one is such fun to read. It's authored by five sisters. Pretty much anything goes, here. Fashion, family, DIY, fun things for kids, food etc. It's lovely!
