NYC Liquid LipShine Glosses

NYC did a promo where the first 50 people to sign up for their newsletter won two of their new Liquid Lipshine lip glosses. Guess who managed to be one of those first 50 people. Yep, yours truly. =)

The glosses arrived the other day, and of course I had to try them out immediately.

What THEY say about these glosses (from their web site): NYC New York Color Liquid Lip Shine is getting headlines with seriously high-drama color at a seriously low price. Pure pigments give a 3-D effect that’s off-the-charts glossy. Tons of hot new shades, from preppy nudes to bold statement hues – all for less than your weekly fashion magazine.
There are 10 shades available. I'm not sure how that counts as "tons of hot new shades" especially when you consider one of them is clear, so really it is nine shades available... but I'll let that one go for now.

The colors I received are Fashion Avenue Fuchsia (#579) and Nude York City (#582). Honestly, my first thoughts on opening the package were "Neither of these will work for me." Bright lippies and I don't get along (to be fair I think it's just because it's so unusual for me, I tend to stick to lip balm most days) and browns (anything even remotely brown-ish) are even more of a no-no for my preferences. But they were free so I am certainly not going to complain about that. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by one of them too, so it really is a happy ending as far as the colors go.

The sponge-tip applicator is tapered for more precise application. It's got a little flex to it so it bends a wee bit as you apply the gloss. I'm not sure if I like it. I prefer brush applicators, but this one isn't too bad I suppose.

So how about that intense color they promise? Well... not so much. Not with these shades anyway. Despite my initial thoughts on seeing the colors, I really can make both of these work for me.
Fashion Avenue Fuchsia is a bright pink/fuchsia color, no way around that. But it's somewhat sheer. Wasn't expecting it to be, but am glad because that makes it more workable for my tastes. Putting a second coat on gives nice opaque color though, so all is not lost on this color for those who want bold color.

As for Nude York City? This is the one that surprised me most. It is a lovely peachy tan shade and more sheer than Fashion Avenue Fuchsia. I really, really like this one. It's sheer enough that my natural lip color shows through it a bit. I wouldn't mind having a lipstick this color... maybe. Perhaps with a touch more pink to it. (I'm just so hard to please. lol)

Both colors have shimmery particles in them, the shimmer is very low key on the lips unless you're looking very closely. As the gloss wears off, a lot of shimmer is left behind on your lips. Not necessarily in a bad or unflattering way as it is still somehow just subtle till you look closely, but it is something to be aware of. (I know some of you don't like when lippies leave any hint of shimmer behind!)

I can't say I see any of the 3-D effect this is supposed to give, and honestly it's not any more shiny than most other lip glosses. It isn't supposed to be sticky, but to me it is moderately sticky. Not the most sticky of the glosses out there but definitely more sticky than a lot of others too. They have about average staying power that you'd expect from a lip gloss. Fairly lightweight, depends on whether or not you layer it on for more color. It feels moisturizing though so that's a good thing. (The Vitamin E = moisturizing, and it is also a likely culprit for the stickiness to some degree.) They have a sweet candy like scent to them; I don't mind it and it seems to fade quickly after applying but some may not like it.

Overall, yes they're nice but they are pretty average in my opinion. The price is great though, NYC is definitely a "tight budget friendly" brand. The suggested retail price is $2.49 a piece - "suggested" price meaning that you could pay more or less depending on your location & where you shop.
